                                             DICTIONARY WORK 2

        Truth to Teach (Source)

Nehemiah 8:8 ‘They read from the book of the Law of God, making it clear and
giving the meaning so that the people could understand what was
        being read.’

 It is important for us to increasingly understand what we read, especially In the Bible.

 Dictionaries (spell-checks on computers) may be used to look up the meaning of new
               words, giving us definitions.

 Dictionaries enable pupils to spell words accurately.

 Dictionaries indicate kinds of words, eg noun, verb, adjective.

 It is necessary to recognise root words to use a dictionary.

        Way to Work (Means)

            1. Review the previous lessons.

            2. Give the children some words to find in their dictionaries. This could be done as a

competition, with points given to the person who finds the word first. If there are less
able children they could work as a separate group.

            3. Remind the children about the use of suffixes and prefixes (suffixes are added to the
end of words; prefixes to the beginning of words). They often change the meaning of

                the word.

Give lots of examples using both eg

                       dis…… , re……., pre…… un…., dis……., wel…….anti……, co………,
                       bi……., tele…….., circum……., trans………, auto……….

                       …..ful, …....less, ……er, ……ment, ………al, …..cian, ……..ssion, ……..sion, ……tion

            4. Remind the children that the suffixes have to be removed to find the root word.

            5. Let the children try the worksheet or find words beginning or ending with a given list

                of prefixes and suffixes.
