Y5 Spring Term. Part 1 CW Lesson 4
                                         METAPHORS AND SIMILES

        Truth to Teach (Source)

 Review Y3 and Y4 teaching on similes.

 A metaphor describes something as if it were something else.

 A simile says that something is like something else, whereas a metaphor says that it is
               something else.

 Metaphors help to create a picture for the reader.

 Metaphors make narrative and poetry more interesting.

        Way to Work (Means)

            1. Review the previous lessons.

            2. Ask the children if they remember what a simile is and when it is used. (Similes create

a picture in the reader’s mind by comparing one person or thing with another.) Often
exaggeration is used to create more effect.

            3. Pin a number of half-complete similes around the room form the children to complete

in their books (see separate sheet).

            4. Gather to share after a set time.

            5. Introduce a metaphor by giving lots of examples then define it as above. This could

be done by the children looking up the verses in the Bible themselves.

Eg Jesus is the Light of the World. John 8:12

Jesus is the Vine. John 15:5
Jesus is the Good Shepherd John 10:11
Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. John 14:6
Jesus is Bread of Life. John 6:35

                              The man is a giant.
The lawn was a green carpet.
                              The garden is a tip.
He has been a rock to me.

She had a heart of stone.
