PARAGRAPHS 1
Truth to Teach (Source)
God is a God of order.
Our written work should be ordered to serve the readers.
Paragraphs bring order to written work.
A paragraph is a group of sentences which is usually about one topic.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Write the word paragraphs on the board and give the children a set time to make as
many words from it as possible.
Eg graph, rag, harp, rap, sap, gap, sharp, rash, gash, spar
2. Gather back to share.
3. Ask the children what they understand by a paragraph (a group of sentences which go
together because they are about the same topic).
4. Let the children look for paragraphs in their reading books or library books. Draw
their attention to whether there are indentations or not. Explain that when typing, a
line is usually missed rather than an indentation being added. When writing a new
paragraph, there is usually an indentation.
5. Discuss when new paragraphs are begun. A paragraph is a group of sentences about
one topic. When writing stories a new paragraph may indicate: -
• The writing is about a different time
• It is about a different character
• The story has moved to a different place
• Something else has changed
6. Let each child say three sentences about themselves, explaining that each of these
would be a new paragraph if they were written down.
7. Let the children try the worksheet.
