Y5 Spring Term Part 1. CW Lesson 3
WRITING NOTES
Truth to Teach (Source)
Note-taking is a useful skill for recording information from a speaker, from a book,
from the Internet, etc
Only key words are needed when notes are taken
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Give each child some rough paper and a pencil and ask them to try to write down,
word for word, everything you say in a minute.
3. Discuss the difficulties of recording spoken language. Talk about times when people
need to take down information from a speaker, eg in church listening to a sermon, in a
lecture at college or university, a journalist interviewing someone, listening to a tape
or DVD, etc. Discuss the challenges of writing information from books or the Internet.
4. Let the children suggest ways of overcoming these difficulties, eg using a tape
recorder, taking notes, making a video/DVD with recording equipment.
5. Talk about the skill of taking notes with pen and paper. Discuss the importance of
identifying key words – often nouns but sometimes verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc.
Unnecessary words are left out; words like the, and, then and other conjunctions.
6. Put some key words on the board for the children to put into sentences.
Eg palace queen king servants royal guards
giraffe long-necked long-legged jungle trees small-eared
7. Read a paragraph from a book for the children to identify the key words, or give pairs
of children a paragraph of writing to note the key words.
8. Let the children try the worksheet or write some notes for their project or another
subject, given the key words.
