LESSON 1
The use of paragraphs in recording factual information
Talk about paragraphs bringing order to writing by the grouping together of similar thoughts
or information. Give the children a factual subject to gather information to record in
paragraphs.
Eg Animals - appearance, habitat, food, young, noise
Birds - appearance, haunt, nest, eggs, food, notes
Sports - team, equipment, rules, main events
Computers - types, software, Internet, email
LESSON 2
The use of paragraphs in recording ideas
Divide the class into two halves to discuss healthy and unhealthy foods. Choose one half of
the class to defend junk foods and the other to defend healthy foods. Let the children write
paragraphs arguing the case for and against healthy foods, eg fruit and vegetables, brown
bread, pure juice v fast foods, lots of sweets, cakes, white bread, fizzy drinks, etc.
Alternatively, let the children discuss other topics such as whether money should be spent
on space travel or feeding the hungry. The discussion should be written in paragraphs with
similar thoughts grouped together.
