Y5 Spring Term, Writing Words (WW)

        LESSON 3

        Extending notes into prose

Talk about a relevant topic while the children take notes to later expand into an extended

piece of writing. Alternatively, give the children a sheet of notes to expand into a piece of
        prose.

        LESSON 4

        The use of metaphors

Talk about the ‘I am…’ statements of Jesus, eg ‘I am the Bread of Life’. Let the children
select one of them to write about, perhaps with their own testimonies of what Jesus has

        meant to them.

Eg Jesus is the Good Shepherd John 10 Psalm 23

Jesus is the Vine John 15
Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life John 14:6
Jesus is the Light of the World John 8:12
Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life John 11:25

        LESSONS 5-6

        Winter to Spring

Talk about the changing seasons and the signs of Spring-time evident in creation. Let the
children suggest changes they have observed, eg longer evenings, lighter mornings, buds,

blossom, flowers, warmer weather, birds building nests, lambs born, chicks hatching. Let the
children make notes of the seasonal changes using descriptive words, similes, etc.

Give them the starting sentence of a story – ‘If you go down to the woods today, you are

sure of a big surprise.’ The children could make up a story of a family going to the woods
and having an adventure but incorporating the seasonal changes into the story to add
        interest.

As the children write or type up their story, ask them to leave spaces for illustrations which
        will be added later.
