Science Y3/Y4 – Electricity – week 1

                                        INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRICITY

        Truth to Teach (Source)

To establish that God created light by reading Genesis 1:1-3, comparing this to light we
receive by switching on the electricity.

To ascertain what we mean by ‘electricity’ and to establish from where it comes.

Distinguish between static and current electricity.

Compile a list of uses of electricity in our daily lives, naming as many electrical appliances as
                possible.

Establish that electricity gives us light, heat and power.

        Way to Work (Means)

               1. Show a display of electrical equipment and explain that this is the new topic we will be
                       studying.

                2. Define electricity by letting the children look in dictionaries.

                3. Let the children divide into groups to list as many electrical appliances as they can.
                       Gather back to share.

                4. Ask how people received light before electricity was invented. Read Genesis 1:1-3. God
is the source of all light, energy and power. Discuss the God-given ability man has to
invent things. Perhaps the children could find out who invented electricity.

                5. Talk about the two kinds of electricity – static and current.

                6. Ask the children to suggest where electricity comes from. (Battery, sparks, power
                       station)

                7. Let the children complete the first part of the worksheet or write notes of the lesson
                       so far.

                8. Let the children work in pairs or groups to list the uses of electricity.

                9. Establish why electricity is so useful to us in giving us power, heat and light.

                10. Complete the worksheet or notes.

               11. End by thanking God for people who have invented electricity for us to use.
