INVADERS AND SETTLERS

        Truth to Teach

               • To introduce History as ‘His (God’s) Story’

Acts 17::26 ‘From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the

whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact
                                     places where they should live.’

               • To show the children that God is sovereign over the people of every nation

               • To introduce the project on King Alfred and the Vikings

               • To give chronological understanding by looking at invaders and settlers from

                   100BC until 1100 AD

               • To introduce the concept of a time-line

        Way to Work

        1. Ask the children if they know what History really means then introduce it as ‘His
Story’, God’s plan for the world he created.

        2. Put a plate of burnt cakes, a candle, school prospectus, a Viking sail and a Bible on a
tray and ask if the children know how these items are connected.

                   • Alfred, according to legend, burnt the cakes. He had hidden, disguised, in a

swineherd’s house and she asked him to look after her cakes in the oven but he
let them burn. She beat him but realised afterwards who he was and
                       apologised.
                   • Alfred was a Christian who invented the candle clock and started the first

                       Christian school.
                   • Alfred fought the Vikings who sailed in boats with red and white striped sails

        3. If possible, have a time-line on the wall with various biblical characters on it. Talk
about the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Picts and Scots invading Britain before the Vikings.

Discuss why so many wanted to invade our land (good farmland, climate, etc).
