As well as learning historical facts the children will realise the importance of written records
from which to gather information about the past but also to record for future generations.
They will have learnt about the world into which King Alfred was born and the importance he
placed on reading and writing.
INFORMATION FOR LESSON 2
The Witan
The main decisions were taken by a group of
wise men called the ’Witan’. These men
advised the king.
The Burgh
The Anglo-Saxons built walled towns called
‘burghs’. In the middle there was often a
fortress.
Anglo-Saxon Homes
The Anglo-Saxons built wooden homes with
ANGLO-SAXON KINGDOMS
thatched roofs. Many have rotted away so
archaeologists cannot find them.
