Way to Work
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Dress up a number of children as kings, eg David, Henry V111, Solomon, Saul, Alfred,
Jesus. Discuss briefly with the children the strengths and weaknesses of each king.
Alternatively, read out some information about each king and let the children guess
who it is.
a) He wrote lots of psalms.
b) Shakespeare wrote a play about him.
c) He was a very rich and wise king.
d) He was a jealous king who tried to kill his opponents.
e) He is the perfect King.
f) His father was Ethelwulf.
3. Ascertain how much the children already know about King Alfred before reading
sections from the Ladybird book on King Alfred.
Alfred was born in Wantage in 849 AD. Father was Ethelwulf, mother was Osburh.
Brothers were Ethelbald, Ethelburt, Ethelred.
Alfred went to Rome as a young boy to ask the Pope to pray for Wessex to be saved
from the Vikings.
When Alfred learnt to read he was given a book of Saxon poetry.
His father died when he was nine.
Alfred formed an army and a navy to fight the Vikings. He prayed before each battle.
4. Divide the children into twos or threes to write a short speech which Alfred may have
given to his men before they set out for battle. (This could be done in an English
lesson.)
5. Gather back to share speeches then let the children complete the worksheet.
6. End by reviewing the lesson and thanking God for King Alfred. Refer to Proverbs 21:1.
