4.4 Name Authority Cooperative Program
NACO is the Library of Congress Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO). Through this international collaborative programme, Unisa LIS and South African libraries contribute authority records for agents, places, works and expressions to the LC/NACO Authority File. Dr Hester Marais (Cataloguer at Unisa LIS) is a representative of South Africa Funnel. She provides training to cataloguers at various South African academic libraries on creating Name Authorities on an International Database. In 2023, ten cataloguers attended the Name Authority Cooperative Program NACO workshop held in Bloemfontein, and 34 NACO submissions were reviewed for Western Cape and Free State libraries.
4.5 Subject Authority Cooperative Program
SACO is the Library of Congress Subject Authority Cooperative Program (SACO) that enables member institutions to submit proposals for additions to Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). Ms D Netshifume (Acting Manager: Cataloguing and Quality Assurance, Unisa LIS) and Ms F Darries (Deputy Director: Cataloguing, Unisa LIS) have been approved as coordinators of the South Africa Subject Authority Cooperative Funnel (SACOF) by the Library of Congress. The South African SACOF enables cataloguers and scholars to submit proposals for changes and additions to the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) related to South Africa.
