5.2 IFLA Regional Office
During the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) World Congress in Rotterdam in August 2023, Unisa LIS was selected to host the IFLA Regional Office for sub-Saharan Africa for three years (2024- 2026). Unisa LIS, in collaboration with the IFLA Regional Office for Africa, hosted the Hub Programme for IFLA Head Quarter (HQ) during the World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) 2023. Two staff members, Mr Firesenbet Adela, from the Ethiopia Learning Centre, and Ms Happiness Mzulwini, from the Science Library, attended and were recognised as IFLA Ambassadors for Young Emerging Leaders. It is envisaged that they will continue with this IFLA movement.
5.3 Unisan appointed to Limpopo Provincial Library Council
The appointment of Ms Mercy Mokgele (Manager: Library Services, Unisa Polokwane) to the Limpopo Library Council for a three-year term (2023-2026) is a momentous achievement that will undoubtedly influence the direction of libraries in the region going forward. The Council is crucial in providing advice to the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, and is responsible for ensuring that libraries keep developing into vital centres of learning and culture.
