Rules of Evidence
The proper planning and documentation of the assessment will prepare the assessor to
conduct a quality assessment. However this is not enough. To ensure a quality assessment
the assessor needs to carefully check the evidence they have gathered to ensure it meets the
Rules of Evidence.
To meet the Rules of Evidence, it must be Valid, Sufficient, Current and Authentic.
Valid evidence:
• is representative of what is being judged. The evidence of both the knowledge
and skills needed to perform the tasks is provided.
Sufficient evidence:
• assessors have to collect enough evidence to make a sound judgement of
competence. The quality and quantity of evidence is important.
Current evidence:
• produced recently showing current standards. Not out of date.
Authentic evidence:
• assessors must be confident that evidence presented is the candidate’s own work.
