Structuring Constructive Feedback
1. Feedback Sandwich
The feedback sandwich means that feedback pointing out opportunities for
improvement is ‘sandwiched’ between two ‘slices’ of praise.
Example Feedback sandwich
(First): How do you feel that went?
(bread): I was impressed by how quickly and easily you were able to do that.
(meat): The only part where you seemed to struggle was…
(bread): Overall, you managed very well, finishing the task well within required
timeframes.
2. Feedback Staircase
The staircase approach means that feedback begins by consolidating what the learner
has done well. Then, the ‘step-up’ is offered; a suggestion for improved performance.
Example Feedback staircase
(First): How did you feel that went?
Has done
well: I think it was well done. Your report is divided into clear sections. This
makes it easy to work through.
To work on: To make it even better, I suggest adding a contents page just behind
the cover page. This will make it easier for people to understand how
the report is structured.
3. Feedback GROW
GROW assists in self-reflection and future planning for improvement or achievement of
set up goals. It is a tool for the facilitator to encourage the learner to self-review and
reflect. Well phrased and thought provoking questions are needed, as well as good
listening skills from both the facilitator and learner.
