Event creation and development
Why host an event?
There are many reasons why a club/federation may choose to host an event. For
example, it may be that the club/federation has made an annual commitment and
that there is an expectation from members and the community.
It is important when planning an event to be clear about why the event is being
held. Some potential reasons for clubs/federations staging events may be to:
• help the local community inform/educate members or the community about an
activity
• promote an activity to newcomers
• deliver benefits to sponsors and members
• obtain media coverage
• increase income.
Determine the need for an event
You will need to be confident that the event will be a success, so before you begin
planning, make sure that there is actually a need for the event. Does the sport
need it? Does the community want it?
Activity 5.1
Think of an event that your club/federation would like to host and answer the
following questions:
• What is the event?
• Why do you want to host the event?
• When will the event be held?
