Not only the stockpiling, as a result of social distancing, travel demand has
dropped due to an increased amount of working from home, e-learning, and a
reduced number of public activities and events. People might be more inclined to
perform activities at home with family members or close friends. This resulted in
less car traffic - and less congestion during peak hours and reduced public
transport ridership. They are also inclined to get home-delivery of goods purchased
online, resulting in fewer trips. Thus, the grocery sales became way up, but the
travel industry has declined rapidly. Delivery services showed high consumption
and anxiety over viruses.
Chapter 3: Difference of people’s behaviour between other pandemic
cases
A pandemic like this is not the first time happening. Other pandemic cases
had existed, such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) or Middle East
Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), and the people showed different kinds of behaviors
compared to the pandemic that is going on now, which is COVID-19.
People are taking this pandemic, COVID-19, more seriously than the
previous pandemics. For the evidence, governments of several countries have
announced starting the new semester online, which is an unprecedented decision,
because it is the first time to start school online. It shows that people are more
concerned about the present pandemic than the previous pandemics. Social norms
such as social distancing and stockpiling also have existed before, but it is more
severe now.
Also, most people are experiencing that the clock is moving more slowly. It
means that people are feeling as time is going more slowly due to the lockdown
and self-quarantine. The more events one remembers happening during a specific
period, the longer that interval feels. During a shutdown, the absence of memorable
