Umpire Brab Hallowes has set 70 questions, the answers
to which are in the rule book. Try answering them without
the book and then look them up to check your answer.
I have split the questions into two sections of 35 and 30, and will put the second
section in a later edition. Barrack room Lawyers, “know it all’s” and budding
Umpires should take note of both question and answer!
1) Is a blue mat permitted in the rules?
2) You observe that your opponent has 3 or 4 stickers one on top of the other. Is
this permitted?

4) What is the heaviest a bowl can be?
5) What is the Maximum diameter & minimum diameter a bowl can be?
6) Do you have to play with a matched set of bowls?
7) How many ends in a game?
8) Are trial ends permitted?
9) During trial ends, can you change your bowls for another set?
10) What colour should the “Jack” be?
11) What is the maximum & minimum diameter of the “Jack”?
12) What is the maximum and minimum weight of the jack?
13) What is the distance from the Dead Line to the Ditch Line?
14) If a toucher in the ditch is hit & moved by the jack as a result of itself being
moved by a toucher being promoted into the ditch. Do they all remain where they
are? Are some or all of them replaced where they came from?
15) If the jack is 50% in the ditch and 50% in the live area, and a wood on its original
course enters the ditch area and touches the jack, without touching the fender or any
touchers in the ditch. Is this wood live or dead?
16) Is the jack live or dead if it rebounds from the halls skirting and floor back onto
the mat?
17) What colours can the block be?
18) Can the block have a rotating top?
19) What are the max and minimum dimensions of the centre block?
20) Can the centre block be fixed to the mat?
21) How deep is the ditch?
22) Who plays first after a tied end?
