Every year Cerne Abbas SMBC holds a number of events to raise money for charity in-
cluding two competitions, the ‘Six of the Best’ and a Triples competition. The 2019 nomi-
nated charities were Weldmar Hospicecare, a local cancer charity and Alzheimer’s Research
UK. These two events and a popular themed crossword were the main contributors to over
£1100 raised for these worthy causes. The club would like to thank all those who contributed so
generously, participated and put so much effort into making these events a success.

Six of the Best
Six of the Best
This year’s six teams included two from Dorset, two from Somerset and one each from Devon
and Cornwall. 2018/19 Dorset League Division 1 and Blackmore Vale Division 1 Champions
Hazelbury Bryan were once again invited to try and win this tough competition for the first time.
2018/19 Dorset League Runners-up and twice Six of the Best Finalists Heatherlands were also
asked back for another go.
From Somerset multiple previous winners Templecombe and Milborne Port were invited.
Wonford, also multiple previous winners, represented Devon and winners for the last two years,
Holmans, made the long trip from Cornwall with an especially strong team. The unusual com-
petition format comprises three rounds of Singles, Pairs and Triples, the top two teams qualifying
for the final.
Qualifying Rounds
Qualifying Rounds
Qualification was very tight with both Heatherlands and Templecombe finishing on 12 points out
of a possible 18. Heatherlands topped the table with a superior shot difference. The holders,
Holmans, just missed out with 11 points. Hazelbury Bryan finished 4th, two points behind on
50%. Huge credit was due to a plucky team from Milborne Port, all of whose best players had
to withdraw, but the team still managed to win a game, an achievement in this company.
Final
In the final Singles Jim Mannell of Templecombe initially made the running against Sam Harvey.
Although Steve Stanton and Mark White, playing the Pairs for Heatherlands, were winning
against Robert Nevitt and Alan Berry, Heatherlands Triples were struggling, so Templecombe
were winning overall. However, Sam Harvey gradually got the upper hand in the Singles, so as
the match came to a climax, Heatherland were winning on two mats and Templecombe on one.
