RESEARCH
HPB Clinical Database Project
We maintain a prospectively collected registry of all patients who undergo non-transplant HPB surgery. This database
focuses on operative and perioperative complication data. The data from this database is used to support clinical research and
for continuous quality assurance. It is essential that we collect high quality data at all times. HPB fellows are expected to
contribute to data quality by acting as a liaison between the database staff and the surgical team.
They are responsible for filling out data extraction forms and clarifying operative and clinical details for patients with the
Database Manager, David Chan, as necessary.
Information from the database can be requested for clinical, quality, or research purposes. Please email requests to: David
Chan at david.chan@uhn.ca; REB approvals, if required, must be obtained before a data set will be released.
PERIOPERATIVE ISSUES
If you admit a patient directly from the ward for the operating room and detect potential medical problems or
surgical issues, please let the staff surgeon know. There are some issues that go undetected despite best intentions and
can be carefully detected by admitting residents.
Strategies to Prevent Surgical Site Infection
Antibiotic Prophylaxis (ABX)
ABX should be given within one hour prior to incision
If prolonged operative procedure ABX to be redosed at intervals of 1-2 half lives
ABX not to be given postoperatively in most cases
