Pre-Conclave Survey Results
Tara Veazey, Conclave Facilitator, reviewed the findings from pre-Conclave survey. The survey
asked participants their level of satisfaction with and their highest priorities among the following
core components of an access to justice system:
• Community Education and Prevention
• Self-Help Information and Forms
• User-Friendly and Accessible Courts
• Effective Triage and Referrals
• Pro Bono Programs
• Limited Scope Representation
• Assistance from Non-Lawyers
• Representation from Lawyers
• Alternative Dispute Resolution
• Policy Advocacy
• Impact Litigation
• Resources and Fundraising
The results of the survey were largely consistent with the initial conclave discussion regarding
opportunities to build upon existing work. In particular, the highest priorities to emerge from the
survey were: Community Education and Prevention, User-Friendly and Accessible Courts, and
Self-Help Information and Forms. Based on the morning conversation and the survey results, Tara
recommended that the conclave participants spend the remainder of the day focused on these areas.
She emphasized that focusing the conclave discussion, based on limited time together, is not meant
to diminish the importance of all the other access to justice work that can and should continue by
participating organizations and their partners.
Survey Results Discussion
Participants then shared thoughts about the areas of priority that emerged from the survey and
morning discussions, prompted by the following questions:
• What is already happening in these areas?
• Where do you see particularly fruitful opportunities for new efforts?
• Where do you see particularly fruitful opportunities for new partners to support or enhance
existing efforts?
Patrick Talley (Phelps Dunbar, LLP; LSBA Board of Governors) talked about the importance of
educating people about how to effectively use the courts.
Professor Molina discussed the multiple challenges facing people with low-incomes and
immigrants, many of whom have distrust of the legal system and/or no prior access to the legal
system.
