U.S. Air Force maintainers from the 61st Aircraft Maintenance Unit load a
GBU-31 joint direct attack munition on an F-35A Lightning II Aug. 9, at Luke
Air Force Base. While using live GBU-31s is not a requirement in their syl-
labus, 61st Fighter Squadron pilots employ live munitions as a capstone for
finishing their surface attack phase of training, adding an additional level of
focus for student pilots already completing a rigorous training curriculum.

missions with live GBU-31s, a 2,000-pound class munition that uses a GPS-guided 6.5” AD SPACE
tail kit, to provide pilots with combat training experience. Through realistic training
experiences, the 61st AMU and 61st FS develop combat ready pilots and mission
enhancing lethality and readiness within the Air Force.
