Friday April 25 - He’s been there all along
“I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep...” Proverbs 8:27
Before I became a Christian, I went along with the popular assumption that the universe owed its existence to a cosmic ‘big bang’ and that over the course of time people evolved into what we are today. But when I gave my life to Jesus and was filled with the Holy Spirit my eyes were opened to the truth that is to be found in the Bible – that the universe and the world we inhabit was no explosive accident. God created it all. The fact that you and I are even able to consider this concept with our complex minds speaks of an intelligent and wise Creator.
The Bible itself reminds us that we are awesomely created by God, and when we take a moment to marvel at the capabilities and capacities of human beings it quickly becomes clear that a mind greater than ours is behind it all. As a ‘creative’ myself – my background is that of a cartoonist and illustrator – I understand the process of design and creation. Nothing happens by chance. In fact, the Bible tells us that wisdom had a hand to play in creation. This is another great reminder to continually open our hearts to God’s wisdom, knowing that if wisdom was involved in bringing our universe into being, it is to be trusted and relied upon.
Father God, I ask for your wisdom, that created the universe, to flow through my whole being. Amen.
Saturday April 26 - You’d be a fool not to
“For those who find me find life and receive favour from the Lord.”
Proverbs 8:35
Earlier this year we lost one of the keys to our garage. The concern was that if it had been dropped in the street someone might find it and use it to steal things from our garage. Fast-forward a couple of months and my wife went to use an old apron and there it was, tucked in the pocket. There was great rejoicing in our household, I can tell you!
Joking apart, in Luke 15:10 we’re told that when somebody receives Jesus as their Saviour and Lord, heaven rejoices. That’s a wonderful reminder that God doesn’t want anyone to spend eternity separated from him. In the same way that the onus was on my wife and me to look for our lost key, today’s verse from Proverbs says much the same thing about our salvation. It is up to us to seek Jesus. It’s not that he is lost, but we do have to be intentional in our pursuit of him. He has done everything that needs to be done to secure our salvation – but we have to prioritise coming to Jesus in order to receive it.
Now that’s true wisdom! In conclusion, be encouraged by this Bible passage from Jeremiah 29:13 – “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
Father God, I thank you that salvation is found in none but Jesus. I declare that he is my Saviour and my Lord! Amen.
