Sunday April 27 - Doubt leading to wisdom
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the
Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10
Happy St Thomas Sunday! This is celebrated by the Eastern Church because John 20:26 recounts Jesus’ reappearance, with Thomas present, eight days after his resurrection. There’s no better character to consider when embarking on a week exploring wisdom and folly, for if you want to divide a group of Christians ask them if Thomas was wise or foolish!
There’s much to learn by linking today’s text (Proverbs 9:10) with Thomas. Firstly, because ‘knowledge of the Holy One is understanding’ suggests a process of exploration and revelation. Knowledge and understanding are never simply ‘downloaded’ but sought. Thomas is portrayed as the only doubter, but when Jesus appeared to the other disciples, the text says, Jesus ‘showed them his hands and side’ and then they were overjoyed! (John 20:20). They needed an evidence process too!
Secondly, once Thomas had his own encounter, he cried, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28), demonstrating a ‘fear of the Lord’ that made him the only disciple who explicitly proclaims Jesus’ divinity. Finally, Thomas is a central figure in the church in India, one of the most complex mission fields in the world. If ‘the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom’, then Thomas, the disciple who is known for doubt, somehow influenced the beginning of Christian wisdom in India.
Father, today, where I have doubts, let me confess them, that I may experience fear and respect for you – leading to holy wisdom, knowledge and understanding in all my ways. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
