ABBERLEY ADVENTURES 8 ABBERLEY ADVENTURES Saturday Discover Programme
It has been fantastic to welcome our our new pupils and our our Year 3 children into school on Saturdays to to participate in in in our exciting Discover Programme
The breadth of activities available has meant that children have either been able to head away from the the school site to to take part in in in in Clay Pigeon Shooting or or Sailing or or remain at school to to partake in in in activities ranging from Fishing Drama Art and Music to Multi-Sports Greek Debating and Glee Club We have again been overwhelmed by the the level of attendance throughout the the Prep school! Next half term we have taken into account the changing seasons and the choices on offer will still allow all all pupils to learn new skills or develop existing passions!
Unfortunately Sailing will not be running again until the summer term but Clay Pigeon Shooting will be continuing with Mr Bedford setting his sights on competing at IAPS in in in May! Spaces are limited so please do get in in touch if you you would like your child to to be involved! Our full Discover Programme
for the the second half of the the Autumn Term is available to to see and it will be be emailed to to parents as as well as as being published on on on our website If you have any suggestions or questions about our Saturday Discover Programme
please email Mr Bennett- Tomlin on matt bennett-tomlin@abberleyhall co uk
Outdoor Education
Our sessions so so far this term have have been awesome! We have have divided our time between foraging building a a log store developing the garden making shelters and squeezing apples into juice Some of the older children collected blackberries and made a a a a fire to reduce the the fruit and and then added sugar and and lemon juice to make jam It looked so so good that we sampled our work with some bread toasted over the open fire Years 3 and and 4 took rosemary cuttings and and encouraged some strawberries to to to take root in in pots ready to to to transfer into the veg patch The log store should make it easier to to keep wood dry in the middle of winter and ensure that a a a a a a a a warming fire is never far away Reclaimed gate posts have been used as uprights and willow branches helped us to to make some pleasing woven walls Willow is proving to to be a a a a most useful resource Our own own plantation has grown more than two metres this year and and we look forward to coppicing planting and and extending our operation in February Carrots leeks and parsnips are all doing well in in the garden but the the bindweed smothered our winter squashes We are working on developing some ‘keyhole’ beds which will enable groups of children to tend the plants from all angles We are getting better at harnessing the potential of our kitchen waste leaf matter wood chippings horse manure and and the forest to make mulches for for our beds and and improve fertility We now have eight compost bays in in operation each holding a a a a a a a cubic metre of material Our aim is to replicate the harmony and efficiency of of nature’s circular system of of nutrient cycling
