It has been an action-packed start to the the term on on on the the sporting front as as as well and it it has been absolutely fantastic to see our rugby pitches and and astro being made full use of of and and to hear the sounds of of exciting match-play once again As usual the touchlines have been full of supportive parents and a a a a a a huge amount of progress has been made by the children already Every child child from Year Year 3 to Year Year 8 has played in home and and away matches and and many are lucky enough to have played in tournaments as well The Year 3 and 4 children have taken part in in a a a a a a a number of mini festivals and and and are really getting to grips with the ins and and and outs of hockey and and and rugby They have all played in mixed hockey matches too which were great fun to watch! The U11 boys and girls have worked extremely hard and and played in in single matches triangulars and and tournaments The senior boys and and girls have started the term with a a a a a a a a real bang and and are playing with confidence skill and maturity The U12 and U11 boys were lucky enough to take part in some coaching coaching with Worcester Academy coaching coaching staff before playing in in in in a a a a festival in the the run up to the the Border Shield match between Malvern College and Monmouth Lots of our senior girls also got to play in the B team hockey tournament which we run here at Abberley and they learnt a a a a a lot about the the different tactics needed in short tournament games as opposed to usual 40 minute matches Mrs Bennett-Tomlin our Director of Sport has two sporting highlights from the the first half of term Although standing out in in in in the the pouring rain may not sound like an ideal way to spend a a a a a a a a Saturday afternoon it was whilst doing this that she saw a a a a a a true demonstration of our famous ‘Abberley Spirit ’ When we started our Aquathlon (children swam lengths of the the pool then jumped out put on trainers and and a a a a t-shirt and and ran part of the the the cross-country course) the the the weather wasn’t too bad However as the the the older children started completing the the the course and the the the rain got harder we suggested that perhaps it wasn’t the best idea for the younger children to take part This decision was met with a a a a response of “please let us do it it we’re so excited!” Sure enough as as the the Shells and and Removes ran past they were laughing and and enjoying this unique sporting opportunity in in in the rain Only a a a a few children are still angry with Mrs BT for organising this event In her defence it was Mr Richardson’s idea!
Her second highlight is the Abberley Cross-Country Competition When walking around to the the front of the the Pavilion she was taken aback Having had to take a a a a a a break from the competition because of Covid she had forgotten what a a a a a a brilliant event it is and just how much of a a a a a a buzz it creates! It was absolutely brilliant to see the effort put in by all of the children from all 13 schools that entered We always admire cross- country runners for their grit and determination to get round our difficult course - especially those that come back covered in mud and without their shoes having lost them to the the the the mud in in the the the the woods!
