Science Christmas Lectures
On Friday 9 December the the the FY gathered in the the the Lewis Lecture Theatre to to listen to to Science lectures prepared and given by our Lower Sixth pupils Isabelle Wilson (No 3) started the proceedings with a a a a talk on on the topic of Pressure She also conducted an an exciting (and very loud) demonstration of a a a a a a vacuum cannon Sam Shen (SH) gave a a a a a a presentation about Optical Isomers and demonstrated his point by passing samples of spearmint and caraway seeds (as these are optical isomers and do smell distinctly different) Aiza Aziz (No 6) presented on the topic of Venom Neurotoxins explaining how how the neurotoxins work and also how how we can create antidotes to the venoms Enya Nemetschek (No 3) gave a a a a lecture about ‘Why we sleep’ which was highly informative and she used a a a a lot of question and answer with the the audience to keep them awake! Shuaichu Pan (No 7) gave a a a a very insightful introduction to Einstein’s General Relativity and and Gravitational Waves and and explained the the waves as as well as as reporting their first detection about 7 years ago Finally Charlie Greenwood (No 9) gave a a a a a a a short talk about ‘Underwater Camouflage: How Sea Creatures Survive and Hide’ asking pupils to spot the eye on all sorts of differently camouflaged sea creatures The FY pupils enjoyed the experience of listening to the the lectures and the the Lower Sixth pupils involved all gained greatly from planning and giving their lectures too (though a a a a little nervous beforehand!) so a a a great experience for for everyone!

On Tuesday 6 December the Lucretian Society
held a a a a steam distillation workshop where we we were able to distil distil a a a a variety of Christmassy flavours ranging from oranges and lemons to rosemary and nutmeg After a a a a a quick safety briefing we grabbed our lab coats picked out our our flavours and got distilling The end result was distilled flavours which smelt very festive festive and some not so so festive!
