Reflections of A Life Well Lived
Once he had solidified a place for his family in California, he pursued some of his
personal interests, which included traveling and seeing the world. He was able to visit
several foreign countries and almost every state in the U.S.A.
He settled in Alaska, where he became an entrepreneur, managing several businesses.
He received certifications in Hospitality Management and Tourism. He also, obtained
certifications in Wilderness and Natural Resources. He learned many new skills such as
orienteering (using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and
unfamiliar terrain), snow skiing, snow shoeing, sledding, and advanced survival skills.
He worked for two of Alaska’s most notable governors. Governor Wally Hickel, who
served as Secretary of the Interior in the Nixon Administration, asked Curtis to
accompany him to Washington, D.C. as a consultant on natural resources and cultural
heritage.
While in Alaska, Curtis never forgot his family. He made frequent trips back to
California to visit them and made several trips to Louisiana, Texas, Washington (state),
and Missouri in order to maintain contact with other close relatives. He invited several
relatives and friends to visit him in Alaska, including his mother, who joined him in his
entrepreneurial ventures by selling her delicious sweet potato pies. Other relatives who
visited him included, his dear sisters, Jo Ann and Brenda, his aunt Sevada Fuller and her
teacher colleagues from Minden, Louisiana.
When he decided to retire from his many years of working in Alaska, he decided to
return to the family farm in Louisiana. He returned with a new skill set, which he hoped
to use in his entrepreneurial spirit by raising and selling fresh produce. He introduced
new types of fruits and vegetables that were not commonly grown in that area. He
promoted and increased awareness on diet and exercise to the seniors in his community.
He helped out anywhere he was needed in his community and surrounding areas. He,
his partner, Jamie, and his step-son, Sean, did chores for anyone who needed help. They
serviced the youth by donating food to families and taking children to football games
