WHO states that 30-50% of cancer cases are preventable. Cancer detected at early stages are more likely to be cured
with standard treatment protocols than those diagnosed later. As per GLOBOCAN 2012 , India accounts for 7.2% of
global cancer incidence. In terms of mortality, it accounts for 8.3% of global mortality. The three most common cancers
in India are those of the breast, cervix and oral cavity. It constitute 34% of overall cancers and hence are a public health
priority in India.
The main component of cancer screening program are Organization of referral and treatment services, Human
resource requirements, Training strategy, Behavior change communication, Program monitoring and financing. In a
population of 1000 per village, all adult men and women over 30 years are screened for oral cancer and all women over
30 years are screened for cervical and Breast. Oral examination, Clinical breast examination and cervical screening
by visual inspection using acetic acid are cost effective interventions in low resource settings like India. Effective and
accessible cancer screening program thus ensure early detection and increase in cancer survival rates.
