The development of full group participation may initially be a slow process. Individuals may be
reluctant to become involved because they:
are not familiar with the topic
are afraid of criticism or being made to look foolish in the eyes of peers
believe that discussion is limited and not really wanted
don’t think quickly or are not able to express themselves clearly
lack confidence or are shy
have no interest in topic being discussed
have anger or dissatisfaction toward leader or other member(s) of the group
By being aware of possible problems and by working to pull participants past these possible obstacles,
everyone will benefit.
If all participants understand why they are there, and the purpose of the course, and are made to feel
welcome, they should be more at ease.
