WHMIS PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
The "WHMIS TRAINED" certificate (wallet card) issued to
workers by the Alberta Municipal Health and Safety
Association (AMHSA) demonstrates that the worker is
trained in the generic components of the WHMIS program.
To ensure broad acceptance of this certificate, the quality
of the AMHSA program must be maintained. Therefore,
the following requirements must be met in the delivery of
the AMHSA WHMIS program.
1. Trainers presenting the AMHSA program must be certified by the AMHSA.
2. The AMHSA WHMIS program shall be delivered only in cooperation with AMHSA and shall
utilize AMHSA materials and administration.
3. The Trainer shall provide one self study workbook to each worker participating in the program
(worker to keep).
4. The workers shall be allowed sufficient time to study the workbook on their own (suggested time
- several days).
5. The Trainers shall review the contents of the workbook, provide appropriate additional
information and review the answer keys with the workers (suggested minimum time for review -
one hour).
6. The Trainer shall administer the exam in a manner that will fairly and honestly assess the
workers' understanding of the contents of the program. When warranted, the trainer may
arrange an oral exam.
7. The Trainer shall submit a list of names of workers who have successfully completed the
program requirements to the AMHSA (obtained 80% or higher on the test). Scores obtained in
marking the questionnaires must be included. Oral exams and repeat exams must be noted.
The Trainer’s signature on the bottom of the list verifies the accuracy of this information.
8. The Trainer should retain a record of training
conducted. Also, the Trainer must recover all
completed questionnaires and retain in confidential
files or destroy.
9. The Trainer shall distribute the workers' certificates
(wallet cards) to the workers on receiving them from
AMHSA and should advise workers that
replacement cards are available from AMHSA.
