CONTEST OF THE WEEK
Good ole’ fashion fun! All sites will host the contest of the week and the large sites may have to hold it every day to accommodate everyone that wants to participate.
Announce and post winners prominently at your site. Creating a “Contest Corner” is a great way to do this.
Award your winners with ribbons and if you run out, simply supply request more.
Make categories in advance so kids have something to aim for.
Use creative categories so that a variety of participants get a chance to win (i.e., boy/girl, under/over 10 years old,
teams, best design, etc.)
Remember your weekly evaluation will reflect on the way you promote and execute this activity.
Week One: GREAT RECYCLE RACE
You will make-up a list of items that the participants need to find and bring back to the site. This should be a list that can benefit your site. List items like shoe boxes, newspaper to paint on, egg cartons, zip loc/plastic bags, etc. This list should take a couple days for the child to complete. Reward everybody that completes the list of items. Remind participants that they should not go door to door to collect items; they should look for items at home. Try to avoid items that participants would have to buy, in order to bring it in. A sample list is available in Dropbox
Week Two: CHALK ART CONTEST
All participants can create their artwork with chalk. Be sure to use sidewalks only. Create many different categories (most color, most unique, largest, etc.) and include groups or individual categories as well.
Week Three: KUP STAX
The official cup stacking game! This sport allows all of your participants to compete on an even playing field. The sport is just like it sounds - cup stacking. Players are competing either against their own time, or team against team. The object of the game is convert 3 stacks of cups into 3 pyramids. Then convert the 3 pyramids back into the 3 original stacks before your opponent. In other words, what goes up... must come down! A demo of this contest will be done for you at the Monday morning staff meeting.
Week Four: FLOAT BOAT FLOAT
A classic favorite! Participants will build a boat made of popsicle sticks and glue as one of their craft projects of the week. The boat that holds the most pennies without sinking, wins! Popsicle sticks will be provided to each site that week – Make sure you have coins to use for the contest.
Week Five: EGG DROP
The object is to build some type of container to hold a raw egg. The hardest part is to create a container that can withstand a fall of over 10 feet! The box can be no larger than 7 inches long by 7 inches wide by 7 inches tall. These are just the maximums- containers can be as small as they like. The staff needs to determine a height to drop the containers from-the higher, the better. This location should be safe and participants should not stand near the drop area. Only staff will be dropping the containers. Participants are not allowed on or near the elevated spot. To ensure safety, have the participants stay clear of falling objects by designating an observation area where they must remain seated. Any egg that survives should receive a prize. If time allows, feel free to drop containers until the egg breaks. Add a twist to the contest by judging the containers on creativity & appearance before the drop or best crash. This can be an individual or team based activity. Allow enough time for the children to create their containers (definitely need more than one day).
Each participant/team must bring in their own egg!! We can not provide them.
Week Six: BUBBLES
Get creative and come up with lots of categories. Biggest bubble, farthest traveling bubble, longest lasting bubble, bubble tag, etc. Use both group and individual categories.
