Soon each bud will have the courage
                                                      like me

To raise its head and bloom
                                                      like me

And that will be the end of the
                                Winter gloom
                                                      like me
                            The freesias are splendid
Shades of lilac and yellow –
                         As Wordsworth’s golden daffodils
                           On that glorious Spring day
                           “Out-did the waves in glee”
So the perfume of these freesias
                            Out-do even the colours
                             Of this glorious spray.
                               Back to the table
And the chair where I sit –
                            Freesia perfumed oxygen
From Boots of Wood Green –
                           I’m wondering if the NHS
                                Or even BOC
Would provide a bunch of freesias
                            With each cylinder free.

‘like me’ to be sung in a falsetto voice,
to the tune of ‘Rule Britannia’.
