to Vietnamese music lovers. “
One of the reasons for this innovation is the rising trend of EDM
music (electronic music) and Indie music (music created by artists
who are self-sufficient in terms of recording and distribution) as
young people in Vietnam are only starting to appreciate this style
of music more and more. As a result, classical music cannot use the
same techniques as other music to thrive in modern society.
One of the ways that this genre of music could be used to attract
young people is through a traditional - modern hybrid. It tended
to see the transition as normative and innovative rather than being
concerned about the decline of folk music. For this purpose, many
music programs using traditional musical instruments have been
performed. Some areas have established clubs dedicated to the
performance of traditional music. The appearance of a number of
songs such as “Bong bong bang bang”, “Banh troi nuoc”, “Kieu”,
“Tuong Tu” and so on shows that young musicians have effectively
used traditional elements to include in today’s modern songs.
In the middle of November 2020, “Xam
Hanoi,” a song by singer Ha Myo, was released,
and it immediately piqued the attention of music fans,
especially young people. No one had ever imagined that
difficult-to-modernize Xam art could be combined with Rap and
EDM music to create such an intriguing uniqueness.
Ha Myo revealed: “I have prepared a spirit of steel before going out
to the product so that if anyone opposes it, I will have the courage
to pass. However, young people as well as teachers and artisans are
extremely excited and supported. Surprisingly, mixing Rap and EDM
is very reasonable. I tried to keep the most important elements of
Xam art while still creating something that would appeal to young
people.”
