May 6th – Hammock Creek - Annnnd....it’s summertime, summertime, sum-sum summertime once again for the CMGL! The first stop on our annual summer tour of Treasure Coast golf courses was Hammock Creek in Palm City, a favorite venue we’ll see quite a few times this season. The tees we play from make Hammock Creek a bit shorter than other tracks we play and, when the course is in great condition with fair weather as it was today, a lot of super scorecards get turned in.
Among the notable results to report, we saw yet another eagle today from Fred Gehron on the par 5 15th hole! On top of that, we had three players come in at double-digit scores over quota. Wit Buckalew had the round of the day at +12, followed closely by Paul Mezzo with a +11 and Carl Morante at +10. Outstanding golf, guys!
The match of the day was foursomes, all count, in two flights.... AB and BC.
The Buckalew brothers (Wit and Jerry) along with Tom Russian and Ron Rider took top honors (mostly thanks to Wit) in the AB flight with a combined +22. Carl Morante, Joe McCoy, Daren Desiere, and Arvin Turner came in second, with a tie for third between Jim Blevins, Rich Eisenberg, Jeff Lovejoy and Ozzie Edwards as well as Fred Gehron, John Gallagher, Bob Palladino, and Pat Cunningham.
In the BC Flight, the team of Paul Mezzo, Dave Kovalevich, Karl Cohen and a draw took first place with a combined +17, squeak- ing out a one point win over John Pipe, Ron Becker, Jim Gleason, and Art Flath in second place. Bernie Fischer, Howard Malis, Bob DePouli and Al Dlugolenski came in third.
Birdies were flying everywhere today, no surprise considering the course and favorable conditions. John Gallagher and Wit Buckalew each had 3. Jim Gleason, Carl Morante, Val Tang, Tom Russian, and Dave Kovalevich scored 2 each, while Joe McCoy, Phil Banashek, Don O'Such, Ron Rider, Jim Blevins, Fred Gehron, Bernie Fischer, and John Kline had one apiece.
May 13th – Champions - Our summer tour next took us to the Champions at Summerfield course in Stuart near the Hobe Sound line. The short total yardage and roll-favorable cut of the fairways helped the majority of our players turn in even or “plus” scorecards. Slick greens, however, yielded a lot of mod- erate-length putts that ended up further away from the hole than they started, which held a lot of potential blowout scores in check.
Notable rounds of the day were turned in by Al Dlugolenski and Dave Coulter, both at +8, followed closely by Arvin Turner and Paul Mezzo at +7.
The match of the day was a two-man team competition in 3 flights.
The A flight title went to Dave Coulter and Jeff Lovejoy, who ran

away from the field at a combined +12. Well behind in second place were Fred Gehron and Jerry Buckalew, followed by Carl Morante and Phil Banashek in third.
The B flight winners were Wit Buckalew and Arvin Turner at +9. Rich Eisenberg and partner Don O’Such came in second, while there was a tie for third place between the teams of Pete Knoll and Pat Cunningham as well as Larry Belton and Val Tang.
Paul Mezzo and Uno Lausen teamed up to win the C flight at a combined +6, with Al Dlugolenski and Jim Gleason coming in second. Two teams tied for third – Ron Becker and Tim Mygatt, as well as Harvey Levy and Howard Malis.
The relative ease of getting to the greens in regulation yielded a lot of birdies for today’s players. Bob Fisher, Carl Morante, Jeff Lovejoy, Vic Bertucci, and Fred Gehron each had a pair of circled 3s on their cards. Don O’Such, Rich Eisenberg, Lloyd Torrey, Daren Desiere, Jim Gleason, Al Dlugolenski, and Arvin Turner each had one birdie.
May 20th – Hammock Creek - It was a beautiful day for golf as we returned for our second visit of the summer to Hammock Creek. The lead story of the day was a competition format that, surprisingly, we had never tried before. At the behest of current scheduler Carl Morante, players competed only against the other members of their foursome for the win. With groups organized so that only players of very similar quotas played against each other, some very exciting competition took place with many matches going down to the 18th hole. Why didn’t we think of playing this way before? It’s the way most golf around the world is conducted on a daily basis. Kudos to Carl for his persistence with this refreshing format!
In the four A flight groups, the winners were Tom Russian (with a “lights out” 32 total!) for +9, Daren Desiere at +8, Dave Coulter at +4, and Roy Nevirauskas at +4.
B flight victors were Bernie Fischer at +5, Bob Harper at +7, Wit Buckalew at +4, and Arvin Turner at +6.
Winners in the C flight groups included Joe Kokoszka at +1, Art Flath at +4 and Al Dlugolenski at +5, while Ron Becker battled it out with Jim Gleason in their foursome to tie at a very impres- sive +9.
Birdie scorers today included Tom Russian and Dave Coulter with 3 each, Bob Harper with 2, and Vic Bertucci, Carl Morante, Roy Nevirauskas, John Gallagher, Don O'Such, Arvin Turner, Wit Buckalew, and Jim Gleason each with one.
May 27th – The Saints - How we feelin’? HOT...HOT...HOT! Mother Nature decided that Memorial Day, the “official” start of summer everywhere but Florida, was a good time to turn up the thermostat. Temps in the mid to high 90s at the Saints gave us an unexpected preview of July and August golf on the Treasure Coast, but the CMGL players in today’s small holiday lineup of 9 groups weren’t fazed. Jerry Buckalew turned in the round of the day at +9 and, along with Tim Mygatt (in the same foursome!), at +7 they ran away with the field. Arvin Turner, Larry Belton, and Paul Mezzo all had strong performances at +6.
The match for today was our ABC +1 format.
As noted above, the winning foursome consisted of Jerry Buckalew, Tim Mygatt, Daren Desiere, and Val Tang at a com- bined +11. Jim Blevins, Larry Belton, Jim Melvin, and newcomer Dan Berube finished second, while the team of Lloyd Torrey, INDEX ... continued on page 52
