UP AND AWARE - 7
Look for litter around plants and trees – paper, food, wrappings etc. – and discuss how those are some
of the ways in which humans harm and destroy their own habitats as well as those of other living beings.
Tell learners to imagine bigger habitats of oceans, forests, rivers and mountains and how those too get
impacted by human activities.
Make learners walk back to the classroom and tell them to look at the dustbins and their contents, other
classrooms and in corridors. Let them also note if lights and fans are left on in empty classrooms.
Ask learners to proceed with their observations.

Chapter 8: Celebrating Diversity—People (Critical Thinking)
Exercise and Discuss (on page 60):
Material needed: blank (sticky) labels/stickers—one for each learner
Pre-write the labels with the following text for two-third of the class:
• Smile at me
• Shake my hand
• Say ‘hi’ to me
• Wave to me
• Give me a ‘thumbs up’
• Say ‘have a nice day’ to me
• Say ‘thank you’ to me
Pre-write the labels with the following text for one-third of the class:
‘Go away’
After the exercise, open the discussion with the questions given in the book.
1. Do not give any more instructions than already outlined in the book. Usually, the learners begin
walking around not knowing what to do and soon enough one of them breaks the ice and does what’s
written on the labels of the others.
