UP AND  AWARE - 7

                  2. Excuse: He made me do it.

                     Responsibility: My classmates challenged me and I made a foolish decision to take up the challenge.

                  3.  Excuse: You started it.
                    Responsibility: I should have tried to talk things out first.

                  Explain to learners that all stress is not bad. A human body releases hormones under stress and in small
                  amounts. These hormones can increase performance. It is when too much stress continues over a long
                  period of time that a human being reacts to it by becoming moody and cannot function to the best of
                  his/her ability.

                  There are many ways to cope with stress as well as to decrease stress. Sleeping well, eating healthy and
                  exercising are some of the ways to do this.
                  Everyone experiences stress. It’s about a person’s ability to cope and manage stress, and that can be learnt.

                  Too much stress can adversely affect academic performance, concentration and problem solving ability.

                  Think About and Discuss (on page 36):
                  Pictures:
                  1.  Play a sport.
                  2.  Exercise.
                  3.  Eat healthy food.
                  4.  Read a book.
                  5.  Talk to friends.
                  6. Make a list of important things to do in order of importance and priority.

                                          Chapter 5: Collaboration (Coping with Emotion)
                  Collaborative Skills—contribute to group activities and discussions; consider the ideas and perspectives
                  of others; include others in the collaborative process; stay focused on the task; provide and receive
                  feedback constructively.
                  The facilitator plays a critically important role in showing learners how to collaborate. Skills of collaboration
                  are difficult to comprehend, let alone practice. Learners need to be monitored and reminded to follow
                  the rules of engagement. They do not, however, need solutions. Collaboration is a process that is learnt
                  over time and with practice.

                  Explain to learners the ingredients of collaboration:
                  •  listening to others;
                  •  establishing common goals;
                  •  compromise;
                  •  assign roles and responsibilities;
                  •  determining measures for accountability;

                  •  giving constructive feedback; and
                  •  assess the group’s progress.
