CHAPTER UP AND AWARE - 7

(Problem Solving)

Beginning:

In the tropical mountains of Malaysia, lives the Semai Tribe. They are
hunters, food gatherers and farmers but most importantly known to be
the ‘most peaceful tribal people’ in the world. The people of this tribe
solve their problems and disputes through discussion. They choose not

to fight over anything and the most serious punishment, if needed, is a
long lecture on how to behave!

Situation: Two goats meet at the centre of a
narrow bridge over a raging river. There is only
enough room for one of them to cross the

bridge at a time. If they try to push each other
out of the way, they will end up throwing each
other off the bridge hundreds of feet below,
into the water. A wise owl is watching them
from a tree top. The owl knows there are

many different ways in which the goats can
solve this problem.

Divide the class into two teams. Follow your facilitator’s
instructions. You will either be in the ‘goat’ team or the ‘owl’ team.

Write down what your team and the other team did to solve the problem.
