From Behind the StorieS
Molly passes by the notice board and reads a notice on the interclass spelling
contest. Molly is good with spellings. She has been the winner of the interclass
spelling contest for two years in a row. Her classmates also call her ‘The Spelling
Queen’. She hopes to do well this time too.
Molly is occupied with her thoughts when Ms Jasmine, the class facilitator, enters
the class.
Ms Jasmine: Dear all, we will have the interschool spelling contest on Wednesday.
Molly is excited.
After the class, she meets her friend, Mayank, who is in the other section.
Molly: (excited) Hey Mayank! Do you know about the spelling contest
which is being held on Wednesday?
Mayank: (smiling) Yes, I know. I am also participating this time.
Molly: (frowning) What! But you were never interested in it. Besides, you
aren’t even good at spellings.
Mayank: (politely) I have improved now and I think I can compete.
Molly: (making a face) You can participate but I don’t think you have much
of a chance.
Mayank: Only time will tell. I am your friend. You should wish me luck.
Molly: All the best.
Molly walks away. She is so confident of her abilities that she doesn’t prepare for
the contest at all. She doesn’t even pick up the dictionary during the entire week.
Finally, the day arrives. Incidentally, she is made to sit with Mayank. Both of them
avoid looking at each other. Ms Jasmine starts reading out the words.
Ms Jasmine: Everybody ready? The first word is ‘endeavour’.
All the children start writing the spelling on the sheets of paper given to them.
Ms Jasmine: The second word is ‘marvellous’.
Molly gets excited every time a word is spoken out as she can recall the spellings
easily.
