Notes to the Parents
The tips and suggestions given below are meant to guide parents on how they can imbibe
values at home.
Chapter 1 Value: Care and Compassion
• Encourage your children to help their friends and family members.
• Encourage them to do one act of compassion almost every day. Tell them to share it with
you during dinner time.
• Show compassion towards your domestic help, neighbours, etc., so that your child can
learn to emulate it.
Chapter 2 Value: Responsibility
• You may encourage your child to arrange his/her room or pack his/her school bag rather
than you doing it for him/her.
• Set examples of responsible behaviour around the house. Be careful about your belongings.
Switch off the fans and lights whenever you leave the room.
• Sit with your child and develop a list of rules together. He/She must also agree upon them.
Chapter 3 Value: Hard Work
• Share anecdotes from yours or others’ lives in which hard work paid off.
• Attach incentives with tasks that require hard work. For example, if your child solves all the
maths problems, he/she can play outside for an extra hour.
Chapter 4 Value: Time Management
• Make sure that everyone at home follows a fixed routine of having meals and going to bed.
• You may play a sport like basketball or go cycling with your child in the morning to
encourage him/her to develop the habit of waking up early.
• You may share with your child how you plan your day’s work at home or office to make
him/her become more organised.
Chapter 5 Value: Honesty
• Ensure that you do not speak a lie in the presence of children as they learn and imitate the
same behaviour.
• Every month/week, you can have a family time for ‘coming clean’ where each member can
tell what he/she has been thinking or if he/she hid something from others.
