Several friendly animals also magically appeared.
They were the same stuffed animals that had been on the
sofa. They had become alive!
As the kids reached out to pet a cute koala, an amazing
creature they had never seen before hopped out from some giant
Gymea lilies. It had the head, chest, and arms of a man, but the
legs and tail of a kangaroo! The kangaroo-man used his strong
human hand to scratch one of its long, furry kangaroo ears, then

smiled at them. Holding out his arm in greeting, he said, “My name is
Maxaroo. I am a Wise Wanderer.”

“What’s that?” asked Claudia. “Look in your
book,” Maxaroo said.

Craig and Claudia opened their mysterious book. All
the pages were blank! But, in the blink of an eye,

a drawing of a man’s face appeared on a page.
It was Maxaroo! Words magically
formed under the drawing:
