18 GETTING STARTED

     Terms and Tools

To tie the knots in this book, all you need to know are a few
important terms, and how to use certain specialist tools that
will help you with some of the more complex tasks.

      Ends of the rope
The end of the rope that you actively use to make a knot is
called the working end. The other end is inactive and is known
      as the standing part.

      Shaping the rope

You can bend a rope into shapes such as a bight, loop, and
crossing turn, to help create different knots.
