24 GETTING STARTED
Doubling up
Knots can often be doubled—or even tripled—by replicating the
original pattern with additional strands. These should follow
the path of the first strand without crossing it.

Trimming the ends Trim ends
When you have finished a knot, a splice,
or a whipping, you will probably have
some loose ends. Cut off these surplus
ends with a sharp knife.
Not too close
Do not trim an end too close
to the body of the knot or the
splice because it may pull
out when put under strain.
