SESSION 8 - Applying your Superpowers
DREAM BIG, SET GOALS (Continued)
2. BREAK OUT SESSION – THE ART OF GOAL SETTING (Duration: 45mins)
In breakout groups, mentors should address the concept of goal setting by sharing times in their life where they have set
goals that were ultimately attained and those that weren’t attained.
Some ideas that should be addressed in this session include…
• The difference between setting goals and having a dream
• The importance of creating both short and long term goals
• Goals need to be realistic. What does this mean? Provide examples.
Once mentors have shared their experiences they should have participants talk about their big dream (if they have one).
As part of this discussion mentors should ask participants the following…
• What is your big dream?
• What do you have to do to make your dream come true? Daily, weekly, monthly, yearly?
• What are the challenges that you will face in making your dream come true?
• What do you need to do to overcome these challenges?
• How can short, medium and long term goal setting help you? What do they look like if you were to set them today?
• What do you need to acquire or improve on to make your dream come true?
• What part does resilience, self-belief and taking responsibility play in achieving short and long term goals?
3. MAIN GROUP SESSION 2 (Duration: 20mins)
Breakout groups return to the main session. On their return the host runs a debrief session with the participants
and mentors.
The host explains that the goal setting process will continue as part of the journal task over the coming weeks. The aim is
to have each participant establish realistic short and long term goals that will help them. They shoudl use the CREATE MY
PLAN templete provided with this resource to help them (See: RESOURCES Pages 66-69)
As this is the final session for the group in the online phase of the project, the host leads the mentors in affirming each
participant in the program, and highlighting the specific ways in which they have grown over the weeks.
Participants should also be provided with the opportunity to reflect on their journey, and how they may have been
impacted as a result of the program.
