EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
FOOTBALL VICTORIA HISTORICAL REVIEW AND
RECOMMENDATIONS REPORT
As a result of a comprehensive survey process, the Football Victoria Independent Historical Review and Recommendations
Report (The Review) has generated 10 recommendations for the Football Victoria board to consider.
The following is an executive summary of information on which the recommendations were based.
THE IMPORTANCE OF TELLING OUR STORY
The purpose of The Review was to apply a whole-of-game approach to gathering information to help create mechanisms and
platforms that can best pay tribute to the history of Victorian football.
To establish a vision and direction, survey respondents provided their views on why it is important to educate others about
Victorian football history. (See: Report Data)
The clear links between the history of our game and the history of the state of Victoria over the last century, and the game’s
ability to perpetuate community and social values from generation to generation, were seen as the two most important reasons by
respondents. Also the ability to recognise and understand successes and failures of the past and how this knowledge may lead to
making better decisions in the future was a common response in surveys.
LOOKING AT OUR PAST TO PROVIDE A VISION FOR OUR FUTURE
The motivation to keep the history of the game alive and relevant is not only based on the need to respect and celebrate the
foundations on which the game has evolved, but also the critical value past knowledge can bring to strategic planning for the
future.
On this point, survey respondents provided feedback on the ways in which the history of our game can enhance its strategic
planning. (See: Report Data)
Learning from past successes and mistakes again was a strong response, as was the wisdom, guidance, motivation and
inspiration that the history of the game can provide current and future leaders, and administrators in the game.
There was also a recognition that the history of the game can unify it, which can lead to commercial and economic future
benefits that the game and its clubs can enjoy.
BRINGING OUR HISTORY TO LIFE
Along with Football Victoria’s annual Hall of Fame and Life Membership acknowledgements, the game recognises that there
are a number of passionate people currently keeping the game’s history alive though their own personal efforts.
Their work is purely voluntary and does not provide a whole-of-history view and level of coverage that an important sport
such as football should have.
To appropriately establish, resource, and implement a comprehensive historical program, a big majority of survey
respondents felt that Football Victoria should consider creating a full time position for a historical officer for the sport.
