     THE REPORT
WHO IS TELLING ITS STORY WELL?
In its endeavours to construct a co-ordinated, best practice, whole-of-history approach to telling the story of our game, it
is incumbent on Football Victoria to research, study, emulate and surpass sports that have established an ingrained cul-
ture and process in maintaining, sharing and celebrating their history.
As part of this review, survey respondents were asked the following question, aimed at providing examples of sporting and
non-sporting bodies who have adopted compelling historical programs as a basis for their storytelling.
In your opinion which national and international sporting or non-sporting organisations record, maintain and celebrate
             their history well?
70 respondents provided feedback on this question.
In an Australian context, the AFL ranked highly in respondent’s feedback.
At club level, Hawthorn, Collingwood and Geelong were highlighted as clubs who have excelled in this area. The way
the AFL incorporate their legends in their celebrations, and promote their historical figures was also noted.
The AFL Hall of Fame and the WA Hall of Fame were described as great models that are supported by mainstream
media who play a huge role in constantly telling football stories from past eras and keeping significant figures
relevant with the AFL loving public.
On a domestic front, respondents also felt that Cricket Australia, Tennis Australia, Olympic Games and the National Sports
Museum at the MCG, are organisations, events and facilities that are notable in the way they present and share their
             history.
In football overseas, the Football Association (England) has a national museum for the game in Manchester, with a
research facility in Preston. It is supported by a myriad of professional and amateur historians and a football culture.
The official football museums of Real Madrid, Juventus, Valencia, J-Museum of Turín, Camp Nou, FIFA, The Scottish
Football Museum and Liverpool FC, were also mentioned.
In US sport, the NFL Hall of Fame was described by one respondent as the ‘benchmark experience’ whilst others
suggested Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball League (NBA) and NCAA Universities, as organisations
             who also present great models.
On a non-sporting front, a number of respondents mentioned the Australian Defence Force Anzac Day remembrance
events, the Wool Museum in Geelong, the RSL with its Gallipoli services, and Victoria Police, as organisations who
have built an impressive reputation with how they pay respect to their past.
