Remembering Michael Duffy (President 1995-1996)

Past President Bob Heales shared the following with WAD and NCISS members; Mike was a
WAD Life Member and NCISS Past President, son of John Duffy – an NCISS founder, first
President, and namesake of the highest NCISS award, the John J. Duffy Memorial
Achievement Award, and father of recent Past President, Brad Duffy.

                                  Members,

I’m sorry to report that Life Member Mike Duffy of Davenport, Iowa passed away Friday
afternoon January 21. He died peacefully and surrounded by family. Mike joined WAD 50
years ago at the young age of 21. He was a Past President of NCISS and well known in
security and investigation circles. You will find some interesting details from his life in the
                                  obituary and comments below.

Mike’s father John was a WAD Member and one of the WAD Members who founded NCISS at the WAD Midterm in
Cincinnati in 1975. Some of Mike’s children are now carrying on with Per Mar Security and Alarm, now a large 3rd
generation business founded by Mike’s parents John and Eleanor, with locations across the Midwest. Per Mar is one of
the few privately owned security firms of its size in the US that hasn’t been bought out by public companies.

I first met Mike at the NCISS Conference in Las Vegas in 1987. As a new member I appreciated Mike’s friendly welcome.
His friendship and mentorship has enhanced my life. Although not as active in WAD, he valued the international contacts
and networking. I quickly learned from others about the importance of the Duffy family starting with Mike’s father John,
and their significant contributions to NCISS and our profession. That dedication continues with Past President Brad Duffy
and other family members. Any time we needed a Governor or US Senator at one of our meetings, one call to Mike and
it was done. RIP Mike. Thanks for your friendship and guidance. You will be sorely missed.

Obituary for Michael L. Duffy http://www.hmdfuneralhome.com/obituary/Michael-Duffy

Mike served as NCISS President from 1995-1996. In 2000, Mike was presented both the John J. Duffy Memorial
Achievement Award, and the Wayne J. Wunder Memorial Award. Per Mar is a family-owned local security company
headquartered at Per Mar Centre in Davenport, IA. The company was founded by John and Eleanor Duffy in Davenport,
IA in 1953, and is in its third generation of family leadership.

From Eddy McClain (NCISS Past President / President Emeritus) – Mike Duffy followed in his father’s footsteps in
recognizing the importance of legislative involvement for the Security and Investigative professions. Directly or
indirectly, Mike Duffy was instrumental in every legislative success that NCISS has made. From the Drivers Privacy
Protection Act to correcting errors in the Fair Credit Reporting Act to influencing the Gramm Leach Bliley Act. Only
through Mike’s influence, were the legislative committees of NCISS able to get a seat at the table to testify before
Congress on behalf of the profession.

Mike Duffy was a very successful businessman who expanded Per Mar far beyond what his parents had started, making
it one of the few privately owned firms of its size in the country, that hasn’t been bought out by public companies.
Several of Mike’s family including NCISS Past President Brad Duffy, have followed in his footsteps and remain with the
        firm.

Mike Duffy has served on the NCISS Board of Directors for over twenty-five years and his learned counsel and friendship
        will be greatly missed.
