Rocknation: Hello JOEY SUMMER and welcome to Rocknation.
You just released your album “Even The Saints Are Sinners”
on Perris Records. Please tell us about the recording process for
this release
Joey: Hi, there and thanks for this interview! The record process
took about nine months, I guess. I started doing some demos
for a couple of friends and at the end I realized that I had writ-
ten all that new cool tunes and I decided to start doing my third
album. So I did all the hard job in my own studio and I called for
a little help from my friends.... ha ha! This time I have two great
guys on the guitars with me. David Mark Pierce, from UK and
Peter Õstros from Jaded Heart band, from Germany. There are
still more great collaborations like my friend Sacha Spiegel on
drums, Michael Muller on bass (for the second time, he did it for
my first album Written On The Horizon) and my friend and
bassist Markcell. most of instruments I did it for my own. You
know, time is money... ha ha!
Rocknation: What was some of the influences and writing
process for this “Even The Saints Are Sinners” release?
Joey: You know, I’m still doing melodic rock or trying to do it like
in the 80’s. I have not heard new bands lately, but SIXX A.M. is
a cool band from Mr. Sixx, so I should tell you that some tunes
of them had a bit of influence on a couple of tunes in my new
album! Probably the first one track called “Another Shot”.
Rocknation: You live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. What is the music
scene like there?
Joey: On, man! It’s a crap... there are a few really cool bands in
São Paulo, but there are NOT scene, if you know what I mean.
Playing in melodic rock band here is not a big deal...We need
to do it from the heart and only for our passion in this kind of
music. No money, no business man and all... nothing to support
us doing this melodic rock. But we never give up a dream, got it?
So we keep going on! Even the big heavy bands like Sepultura,
Almah, Angra and all, have no a well deserved space in the
mainstream... it’s sucks, man!

Rocknation: You have appeared on releases with Frédéric Sla-
ma and Chasing Violets. Are you working on any new projects?
Joey: Oh my! Working with Slama was a dream. The guy is the
Pope of melodic rock in Europe and I really love his work for a
long time indeed! I was involved in two AOR albums and also
in the debut album for Chasing Violets and I really loved doing
that! Now I am working in a couple of projects here in Brazil for
rock bands from here. But I am developing some ideas for a
new international project very, very soon!
Rocknation: Your music has been described as melodic. Please
name bands or artist that influenced you.
Joey: I grew up listen to bands like: Scorpions, Whitesnake,
W.A.S.P., Van Halen, Kiss, Ratt, Motley Crue, Deep Purple,
Metallica and some softer like: Chicago, Journey, Air Supply,
REO Speedwagon, Queen, Simple Minds, Starship, Laura
Branigan, Heart and suck great artists like that! I really love
music and most of part hard rock bands.
Rocknation: What is some of the music you listen to now?
Joey: Now I am listening some bands like 30 Seconds To Mars,
Redrum, Blue Nile and a couple of others...
Rocknation: What plans do you have for 2013?
Joey: Well... I survived from a divorce that took me a few
months and some heartache...it’s always a bad thing when you
goes though! But now I am focused on my studio work and I
am planning a small tour here in Brazil to promote the album.

Rocknation: Thank you for taking time for this interview and
last words to the fans?
Joey: Well, I wish to say a big THANK YOU ALL!! It’s very
hard for a Brazilian guy to make melodic records in a country
that doesn’t lives this kind of music. But I really believe in the
power of communication and I try to do it trough the melodic
vibes of my music. I am still learning with the BIG ones and I
really love what I do. So I feel blessed having people out there
listening to my songs and keeping me going on! Thanks to all!
