Do you have a process to your work or is
each painting a new experience?
In the past a lot of my work referred to
nostalgia, melancholy and memories of
growing up in South Gloucestershire. I see my
work now as a form of documentation which
has helped me articulate my work. I work for a
well known gay porn studio called
“HungYoungBrit” and in following the lives of
sex workers its given contrast to my own less
explicit experiences which seem conservative
and benign appearing next to some of the
more explicit extraordinary lives of sex
workers. One day I can be painting flowers, the
next erect cock with prince alberts.
The male form appears a lot in your work, where
does that interest come from and is the male
form important to you?
I think subconsciously my interest in the male form
has derived from understanding my own sexual
hang ups, confidence and insecurities. I feel it
allows me to interact and examine the naked body
in an intimate way but from a safe distance
(perhaps not dissimilar to voyeurism). Often using
pornographic images I attempt to capture and
appreciate the beauty of one of the most natural
acts we experience. We eat, we breath, we fuck. In
doing this I reject debaucherous and sleazy
connotations associated with the sex industry.
Do you find yourself returning to certain
themes in your work?
My work explores themes around sex and
erotism and how that fits into contemporary
society. My work contains contradicting truths
that coincide simultaneously. Presenting
mental and emotional obstructions allowing the
acceptance of two realities. My artwork is a
place where they can coexist. Creating a
patchwork of memories created with the same
breath.
