• Provision of adequate lighting facility.
• Floor markings, sign boards about fire exits, assembly points to alert workers in the event of
emergency, vehicle crossing signs etc. to create awareness of the potential hazards in the
workplace.
• Reducing the level of noise from the workplace that could cause distraction or failure to hear
fire alarms during emergency.
Improving Health and Safety Behaviour
The organisation should develop a safety culture which supports proactive safety measures. In
such a culture, limitations will be admitted, and advice sought. Near misses will also be
reported in order to help reduce the base of the accident triangle through corrective measures.
Within a culture of fear, employees ‘close up’ and mistakes and limitations are hidden, often
with tragic consequences. Management, however, has a responsibility to avoid the birth and
development of such adverse situations and encourage people to be quite open and at ease.
