Helen’s granddaughter Margo shares that Helen was a devoted
grandmother and a modern career woman with not only a
college degree, but a master’s degree as well at a time when
most women were not college educated. “She enabled us to
be Girl Scouts by guiding our mother to start the frst Brownie
troop in Geauga County, an area not served by Girl Scouts at
the time.” As Executive Director “she was careful to ensure
her granddaughters did not have special privileges in Girl
Scout activities. She mentored us in interpersonal skills and
demonstrated that by learning about as many aspects of an issue
as possible, and being respectful, but clear in one’s position,
much could be accomplished. She always encouraged us to look
at the bigger picture and potential unintended consequences
of a decision. It served us well through our volunteer and
professional careers. Helen was left-handed, and often stated
that it helped her be an advocate for the under-dog.”

The only reward Helen wanted after 20 years of guiding the
Cleveland metro area Girl Scouts was a good fshing spot. She
already had cherished memories and a well - deserved sense of
accomplishment. “Seeing what Girl Scouting has done for girls is
my reward.” After Helen retired she continued mentoring Margo ,
who became a Board Member of another council, on how to work
effectively with staff, volunteers and non-Girl Scout members
of the community for the good of the council. Helen’s memory
will always linger in the hearts of those lives she touched. Who
will ever forget the twinkle in her eyes as she talked about her
favorite subject - Girl Scouting?
